Why Small Business Doesn’t Use Email Marketing

Recently there was a post on Alignable about why small businesses would not use email marketing. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard for me to hear the excuses.

I remember 2 reasons people mentioned.

First, not knowing how to use it and not having enough time. If you don’t know how to do something, it does take a lot longer to get it done.

Secondly, the fear of spam. We get so many emails that it is hard to find valuable content.

This reminds us – that we need to provide valuable content. And I truly despise the drivel that a lot of marketing emails contain.

Be authentic. Marketing email should be brief, believable, and for small businesses locally – a little bit humorous.

I’m a big believer in AI. ChatGPT has crafted some very creative content for me. It has also created material that is especially cliché. “I hope this email finds you well.” I hate that one.

Don’t be afraid to use email marketing. Don’t pretend to be something you are not. It’s a matter of real communication with your intended audience. Some people will enjoy hearing from you and others will not and will unsubscribe. Don’t let that hurt your feelings. I have people who have unsubscribed but who still support me. Perhaps they like my TikTok videos.

There’s more than one way to reach people, but email should be high on the list.
