This week I received a copyright demand letter over a photograph of me, standing in my own home, holding my ferrets.
To be fair, I understand the principle behind copyright protection. Creative work matters. Photographers deserve respect for their efforts, and nobody enjoys finding their images copied all over the internet without permission.
In my case, I genuinely believed I had permission to use the image. The photo was taken many years ago during media coverage of our ferret legalization efforts, and after decades of interviews and newspaper stories, memories become fuzzy.
Automated systems now scan the internet looking for copyrighted images — and demand letters can arrive years later.
The good news is that we now have far better options.
Sites like Pexels offer excellent free commercial-use photography. And AI image generation tools are opening entirely new creative possibilities.
Sure, AI-generated images can sometimes start looking alike. But the people getting the best results are learning how to create better prompts, experiment with styles, and inject personality into their visuals.
Generated images can be a safer and more creative alternative than using questionable images pulled from random corners of the internet. They let you create something unique, memorable, and tailored to your message.
More importantly… you can have fun with it.
The two images above didn’t exist until a few minutes ago. One shows a stylized ferret masterpiece. The other imagines me painting it in an art studio. They are playful, original, and probably far more memorable than another generic stock image.
Take a few minutes this week:

- Check old blog posts and newsletters
- Look at your social media graphics
- Replace anything questionable
- Start building a safer image library for your business
Because even if you believe you had permission years ago… proving it later can become difficult.
